![]() ![]() The sinking of the Andrea Doria is one of the most known maritime disasters, and the worst maritime disaster to occur in United States waters since the sinking of Eastland in 1915. The calm, appropriate behavior of the crew, together with improvements in communications, and the rapid response of other ships, averted a disaster similar in scale to that of Titanic. Andrea Doria soon capsized and sank the following day, with the Stockholm heavily damaged, but still managed to stay afloat. That all soon came to an end when the MS Stockholm (known today as MV Astoria), collided with the Andrea Doria on July 26th, 1956 of the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. ![]() She was named after an Italian admiral of the same name, and of all Italy's ships at the time, Andrea Doria was the largest, fastest and supposedly safest.
